Earthmover Sponsors Ocean Hack Week: Empowering the Open Science Community

Earthmover is proud to announce its sponsorship of Ocean Hack Week 2025, continuing a tradition of supporting hackweeks that have long served as vibrant spaces for the Pangeo Community to meet, share ideas, and innovate on solving real-world scientific challenges.

Earthmover founders Ryan and Joe have been involved in this event since the 2019 edition, at which we presented a tutorial on scalable data processing using Xarray, Dask, and Zarr. It’s fantastic to see how the Pangeo community has grown since then. The tools and methods pioneered at Ocean Hack Week are now in production at some of the biggest companies and government agencies in the world. And to meet the demand for scalable Earth data systems, at Earthmover we’re building a fast-growng startup around these cloud-native principles and architectures.

Meanwhile, the next generation of students continues to innovate, and we’re proud to be able to support them!

This year, Earthmover’s financial support will underwrite participant travel, enabling a diverse and capable set of students and instructors from around the world to attend. (We’re also sponsoring the food! 😋)

But our support is more than financial—we’re also providing an Arraylake organization to Ocean Hack Week. Our Arraylake platform was designed around our own experiences, and frustrations, attempting to manage and share cloud-based datasets in a dynamic, highly collaborative way. Arraylake makes it frictionless for data scientists to ingest, share, and govern scientific data in the cloud, without having to get bogged down in managing cloud infrastructure. We can’t wait to see what the Ocean Hack Week participants build with Arraylake!

As a mission-driven startup with our roots in the Pangeo Community, giving back to open science means a great deal to all of us at Earthmover. We’re excited to help make Ocean Hack Week even more impactful, and we look forward to the ideas and partnerships that will emerge from this dynamic event.
